Can I get the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card
The Commonwealth Seniors Health Card (CSHC) provides a 75% discount on prescription medicines plus free ambulance. There is also a range of other benefits to CSHC holders including the NSW Government Senior’s energy rebate of $250 per year.
It is reported that there are about 1 million self-funded retirees who are entitled to the card but have not applied to obtain one.
There is a generous income test limit of $99,025 for a single or $158,440 per year for a couple. The income test definition is called an ‘adjusted taxable income’ which includes deemed income from account-based income streams. Certain ‘income’ such as lifetime annuities and also Super in accumulation mode does not count as part of the definition.
There is no assets test, so there are instances of asset rich/income poor, retirees who qualify for the CSHC.
If you have got the card then you know the benefits. If you have not got the card then check your eligibility.
